This feature-length documentary from 1974 takes viewers inside Fidel Castro's Cuba. A movie-making threesome hope that Fidel himself will star in their film. The unusual crew consists of former Newfoundland premier Joseph Smallwood, radio and TV owner Geoff Stirling and NFB film director Michael Rubbo. What happens while the crew awaits its star shows a good deal of the new Cuba, and also of the three Canadians who chose to film the island.

I was born in St. John's NL in 1960. This film I saw new at 14 growing up in Newfoundland. I still marvel at the arguments against socialism in 2010. I marvel at the sociology and anthrpology that comes to life in every day people in Cuba, but its probably why I became an RN to help every day people navigate health and illness in their lives and I am grateful for the wisdom of Joey and Geoff because these men "got it" long before corporate greed took over peoples basic daily lives. I plan to show this film to nursing students in my classes to help them understand work, daily life and living. I especially love the tour of the mental hospital which normalizes daily lives for people with schizophrenia. This movie is POWERFUL for those who struggle to understand the world today.
