Even at a frail 90, Martha Katz has an impish energy that remains undiminished. She chides grandson-filmmaker Daniel Schubert over his choice of shirt during a visit to her Los Angeles home, but there’s trauma beneath the humour. At 14, Martha and her family were torn from their village in Czechoslovakia and shipped to Auschwitz. A visit to a Holocaust museum ignites painful memories, including a haunting personal encounter with one of Nazi Germany’s most notorious figures. For Martha, however, the emphasis is on a tough but rewarding postwar life in Winnipeg, which she fondly recalls in this warm, intimate portrait of an unrelenting survivor.

Beautiful film, and I thank Martha (and her grandson) for sharing these memories. Martha's resilience is why we need to never forget the Holocaust and how it came be through evil tyrants. My father and his four brothers all served Canada during WW II and returned home to Winnipeg; they fought for a greater good. Martha's story reinforces that for me. Thanks to Daniel for sharing this important piece of history. - Al McCalder

Thank you, Daniel, for making this film. Martha is a living example of the strength of the Jewish people. Today, especially, we all need to be reminded of the need to stand up and be counted in the face of rising hatred. We will NEVER forget ! Wishing you and your loved ones health and prosperity.
