Before viewing, discuss: What is an anthem, and why is it important? Name and explore other symbols of “national identity.” Have students study the text of “O Canada.” How does our anthem portray Canada? Do they agree or disagree with that portrayal? After viewing, discuss the satirical elements of Shatner’s interpretation; how does it characterize the nation compared to the original? Compare/contrast this film with Congratulations, Mr. Levy.
