Richard Cardinal s’est suicidé à l'âge de 17 ans, après avoir passé la plus grande partie de sa vie dans de nombreux foyers d'accueil et refuges un peu partout en Alberta. Dans ce court documentaire, la réalisatrice abénaquise Alanis Obomsawin tisse, à partir d'extraits du journal intime du jeune homme, un puissant hommage à sa courte vie. Sorti en 1984 – des décennies avant la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation –, le film a révélé la négligence systémique et les mauvais traitements dont les enfants autochtones sont victimes dans le système canadien de protection de l'enfance. Lauréat du prix du meilleur documentaire de l'American Indian Film Festival en 1986, le film a été projeté au Museum of Modern Art de New York en 2008 dans le cadre d'une rétrospective consacrée à Alanis Obomsawin et continue d'être diffusé dans le monde entier.
