A Mi’kmaq artist from Nova Scotia’s Millbrook First Nation, Alan Syliboy studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, having mentored with influential Maliseet artist Shirley Bear in the early 1970s. In 2007, he illustrated The Stone Canoe: Two Lost Mi’kmaq Texts, an important publication of two rare Mi’kmaq manuscripts, traditional narratives written in Míkmawísimk>, hailed by Indigenous scholar Bonita Lawrence as “a profound reclaiming of Mi’kmaq oral tradition, epistemology, and aesthetics.” One of the characters from this collection features in Syliboy’s NFB animated short Vistas: Little Thunder, inspired by Mi’kmaq petroglyphs found in Kejimkujik National Park.
