Ojibwe/Métis filmmaker Ervin Chartrand draws from personal experience—years lost to gang violence and jail—to craft sympathetic and powerful stories of young people at risk. Patrick Ross (2006), his short portrait of an Indigenous inmate-turned-painter, won top prizes at festivals. “The film is like the artist it depicts,” said The Winnipeg Free Press, “cool, articulate, with an undercurrent of hard-won wisdom that shines through in the work.” Other credits include Other Side of 49th, 504938C and Fight (2012), about young Indigenous men seeking direction through boxing. Chartrand is active with the Winnipeg Film Group and gives regular presentations to youth at risk.
