Danielle Sturk

Franco-Manitoban filmmaker Danielle Sturk has been creating documentaries, experimental films, dramatic series and TV specials since 2004. Her films have screened widely on the festival circuit and aired on most of the major Canadian networks. Recent works include El Toro (2018), an award winner at Yorkton and Hot Docs that she later developed into a six-part drama series for Radio-Canada, and Why? (2023), a documentary on sexual violence and teens.

    This short documentary filmed at Saint Boniface General Hospital, in Manitoba, focuses on the work of 2 women: Gisèle Fontaine, who helps women in childbirth; and Louise Saurette, who attends the dying. Birth and death, moments of transition that involve a transformative journey, have much in common. The midwife and the chaplain offer themselves as guides on the painful and essential path of letting go.

    This documentary short was produced as part of the Tremplin program, which enables young Francophone filmmakers to make a first production in a professional context.

    Danielle Sturk tackles the thorny issue of sexual violence against teens by boldly asking: Why? Young men, witnesses to the prevailing culture, and young women survivors of sexual assault share their personal reflections in the hopes of sparking the dialogue needed to end gender-based violence. Because things only change when people start talking and taking action.
