Tracey Deer
A dynamic and versatile filmmaker from the Kanien’kéhaka (Mohawk) community of Kahnawake, working in both documentary and fiction, Tracey Deer has numerous credits as producer, director and writer. Mohawk Girls (2005), an engaging group portrait of teenagers from her home reserve, won the Alanis Obomsawin Best Documentary Award at imagineNATIVE, and she later adapted it into a successful TV series. Additional director credits include Club Native, an exploration of contested blood quantum laws, and Kanien’kehá:ka/Living the Language, which profiles a Kanien’kehá:ka language immersion program. In 2006, she founded Mohawk Princess Pictures, dedicated to reflecting “the complex realities of modern Aboriginal life.”
