Born in Santiago de Chile, Marilú Mallet is a multi-award-winning director and one of the most important female filmmakers of the Chilean diaspora. She permanently settled in Canada after the 1973 coup against Salvador Allende. In 1974, collaborating with fellow Chilean filmmakers Jorge Fajardo and Rodrigo Gonzalez, Mallet completed the NFB triptych film Il n’y a pas d’oubli, to which she contributed the 25-minute short Lentemente (1974), one of the first films ever directed by a Latin American-born filmmaker in Canada. During a career spanning almost 50 years, she has directed five NFB films in total, including Les Borges (1978), Mémoires d’une enfant des Andes (1985), Chère Amérique (1990) and La Cueca Sola (2003).
