This year, the NFB has five films competing for six awards at the 2009 Genies: Drux Flux (Best Animated Short), Theodore Ushev's depiction of the effects of modern industry; Sleeping Betty (Best Animated Short), an updated take on a classic fairy tale; Up the Yangtze (Best Documentary), a look at what modernization is doing to the population in China; Forever Quebec (Best Documentary), a celebration of Quebec City's 400th anniversary; and Heaven on Earth (Original Screenplay and Performance by a Leading Actress), Deepa Mehta's story of a young immigrant bride who deals with spousal abuse.
