During the war that followed there was again internal dissension, between those supporting the Fighting French and those supporting the Vichy government. With the end of the war, however, France put itself on the road to recovery, rebuilding its strength on more solid foundations.

Supplement to the study of World War II as it affected France. Class should research the history of France between July, 1940, and September, 1944, after it was defeated by Germany. Have students comment on the form of government that followed, leading to a period of civil war. Research the liberation of Paris and the abolition of the Vichy regime.
