The Indian Act was a controversial system of determining membership in a Native community. Using as a poignant case study her hometown of Kahnawake, a Mohawk reserve in Quebec, Tracey Deer raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities around the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity?
