Digital Literacy

The digital age is transforming the way we learn, and the NFB has been taking the lead in exploring the educational and creative potential of new learning tools.

How can we use interactive technology within educational settings?

The following interactive productions offer practical guidance on using digital media. They help develop competencies in digital literacy while exploring new notions of digital citizenship and creativity.

Highrise/Out My Window

One of the world’s first 360° web-documentaries, this interactive work promotes digital citizenship and explores vertical living in suburbs around the globe. The cross-media online project encourages an appreciation of diverse communities and an understanding of their members’ stories. Students can expand on the project through personal and creative writing to explore the power of music, art and culture in urban highrise settings. By designing their own models of effective highrise buildings, learners come to understand the impact of physical environment on human behaviour. Flub and Utter

Flub and Utter

A poet’s speech challenges prompt students to explore, through journaling and dramatic improvisation, their own struggles with self-expression. Learners will also be encouraged to research different aspects of human speech. And they can take inspiration from highlighted words to create their own poetry and personal websites for connecting with student writers from around the world. By watching related NFB films online, students can delve deeper into human challenges expressed through video, drama and poetry, among other forms.

Welcome to Pine Point

Welcome to Pine Point

Learners click on diverse links to investigate themes such as: landscape, memory, mementos, identity and friendship. They gain insight into the human experience by engaging with the site’s poignant narratives, perhaps comparing the stories they hear with stories of their own. They can explore relationships, communities and school experiences by creating their own virtual or hands-on personal and group albums. The site’s design invites the study of creative visual and narrative interactive techniques.

Workshops

AtelierIn addition to public events at the Toronto Mediatheque and the Montreal CineRobotheque, the NFB hosts regular media education workshops across Canada.

Our NFB workshop facilitators have taught documentary production, stop-motion animation filmmaking and digital storytelling to youth in remote communities. These events cover a broad range of subjects, offering participants the chance to engage in technical innovation and to create their own socially relevant media.
