A selection of some of our best animated films that use this technique, which creates the illusion of movement with an immobile object or character. The animator shoots one frame of a scene, slightly moves the subject, shoots a second frame, and so on.

Hedgehog's HomeEva Cvijanovic 2017 10 minIn a lush and lively forest lives a hedgehog. He is respected and envied by the other animals. However, Hedgehog’s unwavering devotion to his home annoys a quartet of insatiable beasts. Together, they march off towards Hedgehog’s home and spark a tense and prickly standoff.
Exquisitely directed by Eva Cvijanović and based on the classic story by Branko Ćopić, a writer from the former Yugoslavia, Hedgehog’s Home is a warm and universal tale for young and old that reminds us there truly is no place like home. -
Freaks of NurtureAlexandra Lemay 2018 6 minFreaks of Nurture is an animated short about a neurotic mother-daughter relationship inspired by the filmmaker’s own unorthodox upbringing with her single-parent mom, who is also a foster parent and dog breeder. Self-deprecating and bursting with energy, the film reveals that no matter how grown-up we think we are, we never quite stop craving the love and support of a parent.

AriaPjotr Sapegin 2001 10 minThis animated short by Pjotr Sapegin is inspired by Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly. The puppet Butterfly lives alone on an island, until a white ship brings the handsome sailor Pinkerton. They become passionate lovers. Eventually his ship leaves, and Butterfly waits longingly for her lover to return. She feels an ocean of life growing in her belly. The ocean swells, and a small, unprotected mussel washes up on the shores of her body. He soon grows into a beautiful child. But when Pinkerton finally returns, he tears away Butterfly's child, dashing all her hopes. Butterfly can only find comfort in death... but how is a puppet to die?

Ludovic - Visiting GrandpaCo Hoedeman 2001 11 minIt's summer and Ludovic is invited to his grandfather's farm. The little teddy bear finds Grandpa very saddened by the death of Grandma, and Ludovic is fascinated by a room filled with mementos. Grandma's portrait comes to life, and Ludovic is able to kiss and hug her. This poignant tale evokes the closeness and understanding between a grandfather and his little grandson who gradually learn to accept the death of a loved one.
